Decide what you would share

It is easier to make privacy decisions before a stressful moment. Prepare a short description of your pet and decide which identifying details can be public and which should stay private for verification. Do not put your home address, complete daily routine or every distinguishing detail into a public page.

A digital ID can give a finder a contact route without displaying the owner’s phone number. In PawTogether, the public ID contains the pet’s name, species, breed and illustrated avatar, plus a form that sends a message to the owner inside the app. The finder provides a reply contact. It does not establish that the finder is trustworthy.

Understand the limits of a QR page

A QR code is a convenient link, not a replacement for appropriate physical identification or professional advice about identification options. Its usefulness depends on the tag being found, the link remaining valid, the service being reachable and the owner seeing the message.

PawTogether’s share links expire and can be revoked. That is helpful for controlling exposure, but it means the owner must review the link before continuing to rely on it. Do not print a temporary code and assume it works forever.

Create a clear, time-limited notice

A lost-pet notice should state the general last-seen area, date and useful description. Keep precise sightings private and avoid publishing a finder’s contact information without permission. Mark the notice reunited when the pet is home so neighbors do not keep acting on stale information.

The app’s notices are owner-posted, not independently verified. They reach participating members through the app; they do not automatically notify authorities, clinics, shelters or all Telegram users nearby. Keep your broader contact plan separate.

Use caution with replies

A message or photo is not proof that a stranger has your pet. Ask for appropriate verification and do not let an urgent payment request replace that process. Report suspicious messages to the operator, and use relevant local help when needed.

The goal is a prepared communication path: enough information to help, limited exposure of private details, and a clear record of what has been reported. Technology can support that plan, but it should not promise a guaranteed recovery.

Put a little care into practice.
